Mariners shut out struggling Red Sox


Joel Pineiro and two relievers combined on a five-hit shutout and the Seattle Mariners took advantage of two passed balls for a 3-0 win Saturday as the Boston Red Sox continued to slump at the plate.

Catcher Josh Bard had trouble handling Tim Wakefield's knuckleball in the third inning, when the Mariners scored all their runs. Boston, which led the majors in runs each of the past three seasons, has scored four or less seven times in 11 games.

Red Sox 3, Mariners 2 (AP)


Josh Beckett has a fastball that reaches about 100 mph and a toughness that stops rallies dead in their tracks. He showed both Sunday. Beckett struck out two of Seattle's best hitters after a runner reached third with one out in the sixth inning and the Boston Red Sox went on to a 3-2 win over the Mariners on Sunday.

Mariners rally from four down


A four-run seventh inning -- in which Seattle sent 10 men to the plate -- helped wipe out an early four-run deficit and gave the Mariners a 9-5 series-ending victory over Cleveland on Thursday night at Jacobs Field.
